The Root Chakra in Reiki HealingThe root chakra is the base chakra. Also called the first chakra, the root chakra is located between the anus and genitals. It is said to open downwards. It connects us with the energies of the earth. Of the seven chakras, the root the chakra is most closely linked to our physical body. It affects and, in turn, is affected by the state of our body. It is the seat of our instincts and concerns for survival. The root chakra is said to develop between birth and 3-5 years of age. This a time during which a child is developing a fundamental sense of self and a sense of others in the world as either hostile or accepting. Because it is the earliest developing chakra, the root is associated with our sense of smell and the functioning of our glands. Reiki masters who work with chakras, will "open" the root during a Reiki session in order to better connect with universal energies that can be used for healing. Some practitioners can see auras. If someone has a healthy root chakra, the aura will tend to be red. When a Reiki practitioner is opening the root chakra, they will touch lightly around the thigh and lower stomach area. With women, they will then move to the left, and with men they will move to the right. Some Reiki masters form a ball of Reiki energy and place it directly into the chakra.
There are also other techniques that can be used in relation to the root
chakra. The mantra of "lam" (pronounced "lang") can be chanted while the Reiki
practitioner is finding blocked energies. This mantra will help to clear
the area and allow new universal energies to move in. They may also use
aromas such as cedar which help to quiet and overactive root chakra
