Reiki Symbols If you have spent
any time all investigating Reiki, you know that the use of symbols is an
important part of Reiki. Reiki
practitioners use a set of special symbols as part of their healing.
They may draw them on their palm, or quietly say their names as they begin
or end a healing session. Reiki masters use these symbols as part of their
training and attunement of students. When Reiki first spread to the West, great secrecy surrounded the symbols. However, it is likely that the symbols were never intended to be secret (and, they probably did not appear to Mikao Usui in some magical way). Still, the symbols that Usui incorporated as part of his therapeutic practice did have sacred or spiritual qualities to them. For Usui, the symbols served an important purpose. They were -- and still are -- used to help focus the intent of the healer. Research indicates that Mikao Usui introduced only four symbols into the therapeutic practice of Reiki. Of course, there are Reiki practitioners who use more than four symbols. In fact, many of today's practitioners use symbols that Usui would not recognize. This is due, in large part, to the Reiki training they received. Many of today's practitioners learned Reiki from teachers who added new symbols that have no link historically or philosophically to the system of healing created by Mikao Usui. Symbols have been added that have Egyptian, Indian, Native American, and Celtic roots. In addition, some teachers have simply drawn the original symbols incorrectly, or inconsistently. It seems that, over time, some of these inaccuracies have become so common that they have transformed into new symbols. The Primary Reiki Symbols As noted, many modern, Western-style Reiki practitioners use a variety of symbols in their healing sessions. However, even if they use a large number of the newer symbols, most Reiki practitioners and teachers would agree that the four original Usui symbols are key elements in Reiki energy healing. These four symbols are: 1. The Power Symbol or the
"Cho Ku Rei." Translated as "put all the power of the universe here," Cho Ku Rei is used by Reiki masters
to increase the power and flow Reiki or to help focus Reiki. Cho Ku Rei
may be used before beginning a Reiki session in order to cleanse the
room of negativity and later, at the end of session, to "seal" a
treatment. It also may be used as a type of blessing and a form of
protection for people and objects. 4. The Master Symbol or the "Dai Ko Myo." This powerful symbol is primarily used in passing Reiki attunements to others. Also known as a symbol for wisdom and gift of insight, Dai Ko Myo is considered as an effective symbol when the intent of the healer is to cleanse and heal a person's spirit and soul. Some Reiki masters combine this symbol with the other three for all forms of healing.
