Learn Reiki: Overview & Training Options

The roots of Reiki are ancient.  But, its appearance as a healing modality is fairly modern.  It dates to 1922 when it was discovered by Mikao Usui.  According to legend, Usui experienced a flash of enlightenment after 21 days of meditation and fasting on Mount Kurama in Japan.  It was through this sudden insight that the practice of Reiki was born.  While it probably began as a broader approach to spiritual development, the therapeutic value of Reiki quickly emerged as its central application.

Reiki training has changed dramatically since the time of Usui.  Many variations on traditional Reiki have grown up (see examples on this website) and gained adherents.  People who want to learn Reiki will find that each of the newer versions approach training and practice differently than "traditional" Reiki.  Still, the practice of Reiki in all its forms remains a kind of laying on of hands through which a practitioner connects to, and channels, universal life energy to a person who needs healing.

As part of their Reiki training, students learn specialized symbols that help them to focus their healing intent.  Students of Reiki also learn specific hand positions to use during a healing session. Most importantly, students are attuned to the universal life force, opening themselves as channels so they can transmit healing energy to themselves and others.

When it first made its way to the West from Japan, Reiki training was both difficult to obtain and expensive.  Reiki training was passed on only in workshops led by experienced practitioners or during extended apprenticeships with a Reiki master.  Early Reiki masters sometimes charged their students thousands of dollars to learn Reiki. Today, many of the secrets of Reiki have been revealed in widely published books. A large number of Reiki masters now share their knowledge of Reiki for a modest fee.

People often ask whether some special background or prior training is necessary before an individual can learn Reiki. The answer to this question is an emphatic, No! Reiki is a simple healing practice. Anyone can learn Reiki. Students just need to have a sincere intent to develop their healing power.  And, its procedures can be learned in a matter of days.

Of course, not everyone who wants to learn Reiki energy healing can find a local workshop or a Reiki master willing to provide the training needed. Fortunately, you can find several distance learning programs online that provide affordable Reiki training. These programs make available both the attunements and instruction needed for one to begin practicing Reiki. In some cases, the distant instruction provided by online programs is superior to the training that might be found locally.

If you want to learn Reiki -- whether in-person or online -- take the time to search for the best programs available. Not all Reiki teachers provide a quality learning experience. Likewise, not all online programs are worthwhile.  So, look for those online programs and Reiki instructors that fit your personality and learning style. Be sure that the training program selected has a very organized approach, has a good reputation, and provides follow-up guidance and assistance.

Finally, you must understand that being designated a Reiki "master" and actually "mastering" Reiki are two different things.  As noted, you can learn Reiki techniques and procedures in a matter of days.  But, it takes a lot longer to develop the intuition and healing power needed to truly master Reiki.
