Learn Reiki: The Importance of
Attunements
Attunements
Empower the Healer
Today there are many different versions of Reiki being taught around the
world. Despite their differences, all include attunements
as a key part of their approach to training and healing. But, what
does this mean? What are attunements?
Attunements are rituals or ceremonies
conducted by a Reiki Master. In these ceremonies, a Reiki Master
uses symbols,
sounds, and gestures to connect the student to the universal source of ki.
The ceremony opens the student to the source of ki so that he or she can
access and channel this energy in future healings. It is said that the
initial attunement ceremony forever changes the student. The initial
attunement creates a healer.
When an attunement takes place, the student may report various sensations
in response to the new flow of energy within. In some cases, the
student will report hearing sounds or voices. In other cases, the
student will report visual imagery, including colors and symbols. In
still other cases, the student will report emotions, feelings, or other
hard-to-describe sensory impressions. Exactly what occurs seems to
depend on the cultural background and personality characteristics of the
student.
Reiki training
commonly takes the student through three, or more,
levels of training. At
each of these levels the student receives additional attunements.
With each succeeding attunement, the amount of healing energy available to
the student is increased and the power to channel it is enhanced.
At the highest level of Reiki training, the attunement process helps to
transform a student into a "master".
Once a Reiki
attunement takes place, the recipient of that attunement is forever open
to the flow of Reiki energy. Nevertheless, most practitioners
believe that additional attunements can be helpful. Additional
attunements, periodically received, may act to increase the person's
awareness of Reiki energy and strengthen the person's ability to channel
it effectively.
Besides the
basic attunements described above, many Western-style Reiki practitioners,
have added more attunements to their Reiki training programs. The
additional attunements used in these programs correspond to the concepts
and beliefs that are not part of traditional Reiki. In general, the
additional attunements are said to open the individual to a greater
variety of energies; energies that enhance the effects, or flow, of Reiki
healing energy.
