The Brow Chakra in Reiki Healing

The sixth chakra is the brow chakra, or forehead chakra. It is often referred to as the "third eye". The brow chakra is located in the center of the forehead, a little above the nose and between the eyebrows.  Our nervous system, including the senses of sight, hearing, and smell are affected by the functioning of this chakra.  Likewise, the pituitary gland and our larger system of hormones is influenced by energy from the brow chakra.

Not surprisingly, a wide range of physical ailments is thought to be related to energy blockages at the level of the brow chakra.  An underdeveloped, poorly functioning brow chakra can influence anything that depends on normal hormonal activity.  More commonly, however, proponents of chakra healing attribute such things as headaches, hearing impairments, earaches, sinus problems, weak eyesight, and various mental disorders to blockages of the brow chakra.  At a psychological level, a poorly functioning brow chakra is associated with an inability to concentrate, mental confusion, learning disorders, and free floating anxiety.   Whenever these disorders are present, a Reiki healer may emphasize clearing the brow chakra.

The influence of the brow chakra goes beyond our interactions with everyday reality.  The brow chakra is thought to be at the heart of a higher consciousness and a doorway to spirituality and spiritual awareness.  It is seen as the gateway to intuition and perceptions that go beyond that which is normally experienced.  According to proponents of chakra healing, when the brow chakra is fully functioning and energized ("awakened") extrasensory perception is possible.

When Reiki practitioners send universal energies to the brow chakra, they will gently place their hands above the eyes and on the forehead. They will then move in a circular motion in order to release old energies and let universal energies in. For females, the movement is a clockwise circulation, and for males, it is in a counter-clockwise direction.  Reiki healers may also call upon the powers of selected sounds, gemstones, and aromas to enhance the effects of a traditional Reiki healing session.

Intoning the mantra "Ksham" (pronounced Kshang) or the mantra "Om" may be used to help awaken the brow chakra, and open it to universal life energies.  Blue sapphire, opal, and amethyst are among the  gemstones that are used in efforts to heal, or awaken, the brow chakra.  The aroma of violets, jasmine, and lemongrass may be used when clearing this chakra. All of these modalities will send energies to the brow chakra to help in releasing negative energies and opening the third eye to higher consciousness.
